While the writers do little to distill the story's episodic structure, Spielberg and director of photography Janusz Kaminski ("Munich") do a magnificent job of making it look breathtakingly epic. But those advances don't come soon enough for Joey, the four-legged protagonist at the core of "War Horse." For him, World War I is about to become both an exhausting ordeal and an extraordinary adventure.First brought to the fore in 1982 as a young-adult novel by Michael Morpurgo, "War Horse" has since evolved into an acclaimed London stage play (in which Joey was portrayed by a full-sized puppet) by Nick Stafford and now a movie adapted by Curtis and Lee Hall ("Billy Elliot"). No longer are they sent charging into certain death along with their sword-wielding riders, and no longer are they required to perform the leg-breaking task of pulling 10-ton cannons up rain-soaked hillsides. It's as if Spielberg feared we'd be incapable of reading subtitles. It also would have been nice if each character spoke in his or her native language, thus eliminating all the uneven accents employed by a handful of actors. From there, the race is on for Albert and Joey to dodge bullets, bombs and insurmountable odds to one day be reunited. If there's a weakness it's the disappearance of Albert during a large part of the film's midsection, when the action is trained entirely on Joey, as he befriends a steady stream of British and German soldiers, with a sickly little French girl (Celine Buckens) tossed in for good measure. It's a bond that pays off in a flood of tears when Albert's cash-strapped dad goes against his son's wishes and sells Joey to the British Army at the dawn of World War I. At times, Joey seems downright human in his expressions and body language, which is why the horse is ultimately more compelling than any of his human counterparts, most of whom are granted so little screen time they barely register. The one exception is Irvine's Albert, who displays potent chemistry with his beloved horse, as they grow up together while single handedly keeping their father's priggish landlord (David Thewlis) from foreclosing on the family's struggling farm. The volume of feeling Spielberg elicits is almost unprecedented, but what strikes you even more is the incredibly animated performance he extracts from the dozen or so horses portraying Joey.
